The Deepening Complexity of Crop Circles: Scientific Research and Urban Legend
📖 Crop Circles: A Scientific Exploration
Eltjo Haselhoff wrote the first book to study crop circles on the basis of scientific evidence. In the opening chapter, “The Great and Most Concrete Mystery,” he examines some of the most concrete crop-circle phenomena: the dead-fly mystery, strange deposits, germination anomalies, and balls of light. Mathematical formulas let any reader analyze, verify, or challenge the author’s findings. For those interested in paranormal approaches, he also offers “A Psychic Perspective: Earth Energies, Extraterrestrials, Gateways to Another World, and Messages from the Cosmos.” With charts and color photographs throughout, even readers who dislike laboratories and numbers can take a fascinating journey into the world of crop circles.
Eltjo Haselhoff holds a doctorate in theoretical and experimental physics. He has studied the crop-circle phenomenon for more than ten years and has visited hundreds of formations in person. Dr. Haselhoff was born and educated in the Netherlands and has worked at several research institutions, including Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has published dozens of papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as the Journal of Applied Physics and Physical Review. His most recent paper appeared in the internationally renowned scientific journal Physiologia Plantarum.
At last, a voice of reason

Most people’s views of crop circles rest on shallow, misleading media coverage (the superficial review just above is a clear example). It is refreshing at last to look at the “actual facts” from a scientific standpoint and to stay equally rational when drawing conclusions. That is what makes this book compelling—you can feel that the author is not trying to prove anything. His aim is the truth, wherever it leads. Honesty of that kind is always worth admiring, especially on a subject this fiercely contested.
The science of the unknown
Reviewer: Simeon Hein, from Boulder, Colorado
Eltjo H. Haselhoff’s Crop Circles lays out a large body of scientific evidence that crop circles are a real phenomenon with uncommon properties. From the well-known node-lengthening effect to the mathematical theories of Dr. Gerald Hawkins, Haselhoff, a physicist, builds a strong case that crop circles have scientific characteristics that are not easily explained away. Using Pythagorean mathematics, Haselhoff sets out his own theory: that crop circles may be created by balls of light.
Of course, the model itself is only a possibility. The author does not deny that people can make complex crop-circle patterns, but in my view he does not spend enough time taking that question seriously. Might the circles themselves produce the anomalous effects, rather than some external force? Can humans create crop circles with bizarre properties? Answering those questions will take more research, but this book raises important questions and offers possible explanations grounded in science.
