🔍 Event details
In 1968, the Soviet Union launched what may have been the defining UFO effort of the Cold War Eastern bloc: the most systematic scientific UFO research program. Led by the Soviet Academy of Sciences, it was known as—the “Setka” program. Meaning “grid,” the project pooled data from the military and the scientific community and classified and studied thousands of UFO reports from inside the Soviet Union.
What set the inquiry apart was this: unlike Project Blue Book in the United States, whose ultimate aim was to “dispel public concern,” scientists on the Setka program (including mathematicians, physicists, and engineers) concluded—that a substantial share of UFO sightings could not be explained by ordinary causes, and that the phenomenon had to be taken seriously. Some of the files were declassified in the 1990s after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
