🔍 Event details

In August 2020, the U.S. Department of Defense formally establishedthe Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force(UAP Task Force, abbreviated UAPTF). It was the first time in modern history that the U.S. military formally acknowledged the UFO/UAP issue and dealt with it through an official organization.

The UAPTF was created by the combined push of three major events:

  • December 2017:The New York Timesdisclosed for the first time the Pentagon’s secret UFO program, AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program)
  • Three Navy fighter UFO videos released the same month—FLIR, GIMBAL, and GOFAST
  • Navy pilots reporting in large numbers that they had encountered craft that violated known laws of physics

The UAPTF’s tasks included:collecting and analyzing military UAP encounter reports, and assessing whether these phenomena pose a threat to national security. In June 2021, the UAPTF released its first congressionally mandated report, confirming that 143 of 144 military UAP encounters were “unexplained.”

The organization later becameAARO(All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, 2022).
