Aliens are not only walking among us; until recently they also kept up a working relationship with the U.S. military that put them “within a tentacle’s reach”—or so British ufologist Timothy Good suggests in this loosely structured, hard-to-believe report. In his earlier book, Above Top Secret (1988), Good used extensive documentation to argue that the federal government was secretly involved in UFO research, but this more anecdotal work is unlikely to win the cause many further supporters.
Despite the suggestive subtitle, most of what Good presents is already familiar. He opens by listing reports of aircraft encountering UFOs, then focuses on the much-debated “alien cattle mutilations”—a topic discussed at length elsewhere. Strange goings-on at a Colorado ranch plagued by mutilations do not reveal the truth; they only add further mystery: “Around two in the morning… a mechanical voice came through every radio and television speaker: ‘Attention. We are allowing you to stay. We rarely interfere in your lives. Do not force us to take action you will regret.’” Meanwhile, Good races through assorted alleged cases of contact between humans and aliens, rehashing old stories such as the Roswell incident (alien bodies found in New Mexico in 1947).
Good then discusses disinformation about UFOs in the intelligence community, which leads to his central evidence: the testimony of physicist Bob Lazar. Lazar claims he worked at an Air Force test range in Nevada, where he tinkered with alien craft and learned that the aliens had stayed in “contact” with the military until a 1979 “incident” that killed 66 people and sent the aliens abandoning ship. Good admits that Lazar’s credibility has been badly damaged by a recent conviction on pandering charges.
