🔍 Event details
From July 31 to September 20, 1954,the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) systematically recorded UFO sightings worldwide. These internal files show that Cold War-era U.S. intelligence agencies paid close attention to the UFO phenomenon, treating it asa potential national-security threatand keeping it under surveillance.
CIA files from this period contain the following key points:
- European sightings:Flying-saucer reports from Britain, France, Italy, West Germany, and other places were collected systematically
- Intelligence from behind the Iron Curtain:The CIA paid special attention to unidentified flying objects over the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe—worried that these objects might be advanced Soviet aircraft
- Military responses:The files record military responses by multiple countries to UFOs entering their airspace
This period was the peak of the great UFO wave of 1954. CIA internal documents show that analysts were deeply worried about “whether the Soviet Union had obtained some kind of breakthrough flight technology.” That worry also directly pushed the CIA, from late 1954 into early 1955, to speed up its assessment of the UFO phenomenon—and ultimately led to the creation of the Robertson Panel (Robertson Panel).
The public release of these files confirms thatthe U.S. government began taking UFOs seriously far earlier than the public realized, and that the motive was not pure scientific curiosity—it came from fear that “a potential adversary possessed unknown technology.”
