The Missing Times: News Media Complicity in the UFO Cover-Up
📖 The Missing Times
The Missing Times explores a troubling question in depth: whether some of the most influential news organizations in the United States, many of them closely tied to the U.S. intelligence community, have deliberately suppressed full and accurate reporting on the UFO phenomenon for a variety of national-security reasons. Using news coverage of a UFO encounter at a nuclear missile facility in Montana as a “case study,” Hansen shows a marked and lasting gap between local and national news organizations in UFO reporting. He then reviews the history of censorship and propaganda in the twentieth century, explains how and why elite news organizations work closely with government agencies in times of national crisis, and examines the evidence for this kind of complicity between the media and the government across half a century of UFO controversy.
“The Missing Times is an outstanding book about UFO coverage in the media and, more broadly, about media censorship. Through rigorous research, the author shows a general pattern of government interference in news reporting since the First World War, and from there examines in depth how UFO reporting has been influenced and steered by the government. The book also provides a detailed bibliography for readers who want to go further. I have long been puzzled by why the American media rarely report UFO-related events and, when they do, always with ridicule, while the Belgian Air Force seems willing to release information and photographs of military encounters with UFOs. How can the American media ignore solid evidence and disregard important things that are happening? This book cleared that up for me. Frankly, it left me a little afraid, because it shows that the reality the public perceives really is shaped to a large extent by government and the media. I think I was more naive than I realized. I still do not see the whole picture, but for those of us trying to piece together the UFO puzzle, this book is a crucial piece. Buy it!”
“In The Missing Times, Terry Hansen sets out clearly, and with documentation, the relationship between the national media and the U.S. government, especially on matters of national security. That alone is enough to shake one’s faith in the media as an objective reporter of information. Once you have finished this book, you will never again read a national newspaper or watch a network news broadcast in the same way.”
