Event details

At 9:20 a.m. on February 15, 2013, an asteroid about 20 meters across and weighing about 12,000 tons entered Earth’s atmosphere at 19 kilometers per second and exploded about 23 kilometers above Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, releasing energy equivalent to about 500 kilotons of TNT, 30 times the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shock wave injured more than 1,500 people and damaged about 7,200 buildings.

But before the explosion, multiple dashcams and surveillance cameras captured a startling scene: a bright beam of light caught up with the meteor from behind, and after the strike the meteor immediately broke apart and exploded. Russian officials explained it as “the meteor breaking up on its own,” but the video clearly shows an object catching the meteor from behind at extremely high speed and, after the impact, flying off on a sharp change of course—which does not match the motion of natural fragments in ballistics.

Key doubts:

  • The object caught up from behind with a meteor flying at 19km/s, so its speed was at least above 30km/s, far beyond any missile or interceptor humanity currently has
  • After striking the meteor it quickly changed course and flew away, rather than continuing along its original path
  • The Russian military afterward sealed off Lake Chebarkul, in the area where the meteor fell, and carried out an official recovery operation that lasted a month
  • Multiple videos were deleted or had their distribution restricted on YouTube

The incident drew intense attention from UFO researchers around the world. It is taken as strong evidence that “Earth is being protected by an unknown force,” and it is the best-known video record of a UFO intercepting a celestial object in the 21st century.
