🔍 Event details

In March 1967, at the height of the Cold War, Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana saw one of the most startling events in the history of UFO research—an unidentified flying object caused10 Minuteman (Minuteman) nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles to go offline at the same time。

In the early hours of March 16, 1967, deputy missile commander Robert Salas (Robert Salas) was on duty in a launch control center 60 feet underground, monitoring 10 Minuteman nuclear missiles. Security personnel reported a strange luminous object maneuvering silently above the launch facility. When the object appeared over the silos, all 10 missiles lost operational status one after another—the missiles’ “Guidance and Control” system and “Safety and Launch” system alarmed at the same time, and the missiles went from “on alert” to “not operational.”

Even more striking, on March 24 a similar incident occurred at another launch control center on the base—more missiles were “shut down” by a UFO. Fred Meiwald (Fred Meiwald), then a missile operations officer, also confirmed the experience. After retiring, Salas made all the details public and wrote the book Faded Giant, becoming the most authoritative witness to UFO interference with nuclear weapons.

Key evidence:

  • Independent testimony from multiple officers agrees
  • AF Form 361 (missile incident report) confirms that 10 missiles went offline on March 16
  • The U.S. Air Force first explained it as an “equipment malfunction,” but maintenance records showed no hardware failure
  • In 2010, former Air Force officers testified together at the National Press Club in Washington and disclosed the incident

The incident is a classic case of interaction between UFOs and nuclear weapons, and it has drawn attention at the level of the U.S. Congress. The 2024 report of AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) also mentions the historical pattern of UFO incidents at nuclear facilities.
