📖 Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind: A Chronicle of Human-Initiated UFO Contact
CE-5: A Chronicle of Human-Initiated Contact is the authoritative data reference on the most disputed topic in UFO research. The book systematically records, explains, and examines nearly 250 UFO incidents worldwide—cases in which people deliberately tried to make contact with the UFO phenomenon or with extraterrestrial life, and succeeded.
“Almost everyone has read or seen, in books, films, and on television, strange accounts of mysterious flying saucers: they hover in silence, shoot straight up at incredible speed, and perform daring maneuvers in the air and even underwater. Drawn to their dazzling look and odd behavior, we cannot help wondering whether they are real. For many people, these images come only from the wild imagination of Hollywood or of science-fiction writers…” — from the introduction to CE-5 by Richard F. Haines
Are we alone in the universe? CE-5 (close encounters of the fifth kind) is defined as a conscious human action followed by a clear response from an unidentified object or a humanlike intelligence. That response includes effects shown by a craft or a living being, making plain that the reaction is no accident.
This book is the ultimate factual-data reference on the hottest topic in UFO research. Each file is an in-depth investigation of cases, all over the world, in which people saw an unidentified object or being in the sky and deliberately signaled it. Some contacts led to friendly exchanges with an unknown presence. Others ended in something more frightening—abduction, or the aftermath of a “medical” examination.
After exhaustive research and full citation, CE-5 brings together technical data, research findings, and eyewitness interviews. Whether you are an enthusiast, a skeptic, or simply curious, you can weigh each case study and reach your own conclusion. The book lays out the reality of human–alien interaction: How credible is eyewitness testimony? What most typifies alien behavior? Is an aggressive response more typical of aliens, or of humans? How do aliens communicate?
The author, Dr. Richard F. Haines, is a retired NASA research scientist and a former director of the Space Human Factors Engineering Office at Ames Research Center. Before joining the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science as a senior research fellow, he was an assistant professor of psychology at San Jose State University, where he did advanced research and development in multimedia telecommunications for NASA’s International Space Station. He is currently employed by RECOM Technologies and has written five books and NASA/FAA technical reports. He holds a doctorate in experimental psychology from Michigan State University.

“I usually avoid UFO books, because they tend to push the reader into speculation and snap conclusions. I liked this one. Its neutral tone and structure let the reader explore the CE-5 cases and focus on their own thinking about them. It is often hard to draw insight from a random collection of UFO cases, especially when the author adds guesswork. Dr. Haines, though, puts a rational, consistent structure on the cases, and the book avoids that tendency.” — reader Kurt Story, April 5, 1999
