The Encyclopedia
📖 Chinese title: The UFO Book
Jerome Clark was editor of the UFO magazine Fate and vice president of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies. He now serves on the center’s board and edits its quarterly, The International UFO Reporter. He has published many books, including a three-volume UFO Encyclopedia covering virtually every aspect of the UFO field. In short, for the past forty years Clark has devoted himself to studying, analyzing, and bringing to light anything in the world associated with what are called UFOs and extraterrestrial life.
The UFO Book is in fact an abridgment of the much larger two-volume UFO Encyclopedia (second edition), published in the fall of 1997. In the introduction Clark is very clear: “Unless there is good reason to doubt an informant’s sincerity, The UFO Book proceeds on an assumption of epistemological agnosticism…” He keeps that promise. The UFO Book is clear, thorough, cross-referenced, and easy to use, and it works hard to rise above any hint of a point of view about the wealth of information it contains.
The book includes a historical overview of the UFO phenomenon, a survey of where its terminology comes from, and detailed information on resources in print and other media. Every topic, whether a discussion of a particular subject or an account of a specific incident, is arranged alphabetically and given carefully designed cross-references. The UFO Book is absorbing to read and can fill a few minutes, an hour, or longer. It has an authoritative framework and presents this extraordinarily varied and far-reaching subject in a rigorous, objective way. Clark condenses a vast body of research into a single volume. For anyone even slightly curious about UFOs and extraterrestrial life, it is essential reading.
“The UFO Book, with 200 entries from A to Z, is the most comprehensive and up-to-date work of its kind. One hundred photographs and illustrations show evidence claimed to be genuine and evidence shown to be false, helping readers judge for themselves whether extraterrestrial life exists.” — Ingram
“The best UFO book ever written” — a 32-year-old teacher from North Carolina
Put simply, Jerome Clark’s The UFO Book is the best book ever written about UFOs. Clark produced the first modern, thoroughly researched, and objective encyclopedia covering every major UFO sighting since 1947. Each alphabetical entry (Roswell, the Lubbock Lights, and the rest) is brilliantly and grippingly written, even if you disagree with Clark’s conclusions. Even if you are only mildly interested in the UFO phenomenon, you will not be able to put this book down. Outstanding!

“Over the past 15 years I have read a great many UFO books, and Jerome Clark’s The UFO Book is the best book on the subject I have ever read. Written as an encyclopedia, it describes in depth (and in beautiful prose) nearly every major UFO sighting since the 1890s. Unlike many UFO books, this one is thoroughly researched and objective—Clark does not ignore the skeptics. An excellent, enjoyable book. If you own only one UFO book, this should be it!”
