On May 1, 2003, reader Michael Miley from Sonoma County, California, wrote: When Andy Thomas’s Vital Signs was first published in Britain in 1998, it was quickly regarded as one of the best historical surveys of the crop circle phenomenon after 1978. As longtime editor of the journal of the Southern Circular Research group (now Swirled News, at www.swirlednews.com) and a leading researcher, Thomas has kept up a deep and sustained look at crop circles from every angle, inside the formations and out. With extraordinary persistence, high spirit, and the dramatic scenes that often played out at gatherings such as the Glastonbury Symposium and the International UFO Congress, Thomas has remained one of the staunchest defenders of genuine crop circles and a guardian of the solid research done on the phenomenon over the years. I am glad to see an updated American edition of Vital Signs that includes the formations of the years in between, including the patterns of 2001. Readers who do not know the first edition will want this one. It is among the finest overviews of the phenomenon.

Vital Signs begins with a fine-grained account of the evidence on the ground, including the unusual layering and swirling of the flattened crop, and it supplies important details from scientific studies of the plant stems and of effects on the soil, establishing that the phenomenon is real and beyond any hoax. It then explores in detail what is seen from above: the shapes of the patterns and their elegant geometry, revealing mathematical codes held in the forms. Along the way we also learn of strange balls of light hovering over the fields, and of the effects of crop circle energy on electronic equipment and on the biological systems of humans and animals. The book also presents eyewitness testimony from the moment of formation, including an important recent case in Amsterdam. Nancy Talbott, a key scientific researcher and a member of the BLT Research Team, was with Robbert van den Broeke when they watched three powerful columns of light descend into a bean field outside van den Broeke’s home. Minutes later they found a clearly structured crop circle in the field. Stories like this are what lead people to believe that crop circles are a key part of the global UFO phenomenon.

A great strength of Vital Signs is the year-by-year chronicle it provides, together with a beautiful photographic gallery that accompanies the text, including a central color insert. The chronicle describes not only the fascinating evolution of crop circle forms over the years but also the fierce controversy that has grown up around them. Are they man-made, anomalous, or a mixture of both? How do we tell the real from the fake, and what share is each? Are the simple patterns the genuine phenomenon, or are some of the more complex forms genuine too? As Thomas weighs the claims and the denials, he gives us a valuable, detailed, and richly illustrated guide to one of the most baffling phenomena on Earth. I strongly recommend this book.
